Some islands in Vietnam could accommodate casinos
The politburo of Vietnam has just accepted the creation of a land-based casino on Phu Quoc, the largest island of the country, which is located 12 miles off the Cambodian coast.
Local investors also hope that the government will soon allow the opening of a similar establishment on the central island of Ly Son.
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has shown great interest in the project.
Some of the proposed projects
Although the law on gambling in Vietnam is now flexible enough, and six casinos that are run by foreign operators have opened their doors, many people still continue to leave the country to play in neighbouring countries like Singapore or Cambodia.
In an attempt to try to limit the losses, to attract new investors for the country and to compete with the success of casinos in Macau and Singapore, the Vietnamese government is currently studying the possibility of allowing citizens to play in these establishments.
Additionally, the situation may soon lead to the creation of gambling and entertainment complexes on different islands.
This is what is happening now on Phu Quoc.
A tourist paradise in Vietnam
The island of Phu Quoc was connected to the national electricity grid recently, which enabled a rapid development of the industry.
The island has attracted some 200 investment projects, including a casino that has just been approved by the politburo of Vietnam.
It is part of a project to transform the island into a special economic zone to attract more international investment.
Known for having some of the most beautiful beaches in the country, the tourist paradise of Phu Quoc in Vietnam attracted more than 430,000 visitors last year for its white sandy beaches and tropical waters.
The tourism on the island has increased by 32% during 2012, and it is expected to grow in the future if we are to believe the latest estimates.
Ly Son island
Several Vietnamese investors are also asking the government to allow the creation of a casino on the island of Ly Son which is located just off the central coast of Vietnam.
The island is famous for its fishing industry and plays an important economic role at a national level.
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung wants to support the tourism potential of the island.
His plan is now to submit the proposal to the national government.
