Nepalese casinos are now illegal
The Government of Nepal has decided that all casinos in the country are illegal from now on.
The establishments have been forced to close their doors yesterday, after gambling had been legal there for over 45 years.
It was the idea of the Minister of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, as they casino owners were unable to pay their taxes and getting new gaming licenses, despite several extensions.
Additionally, they did not comply with the regulations which prohibits Nepali nationals to enter a gambling room.
All casinos in the country owe more than €7.2 million to the state.
These pending contributions date back to 2005/2006.
There are a total of 10 casinos in Nepal: 8 in Kathmandu (the capital), and 2 in Pokhara (a major tourist centre in the western part of the country), which together employ about 4,000 people.
