Hungary changes its online gambling regulation
In January 2012, Hungary liberalized its online gambling market.
Earlier this year, the government was said to be planning to extend the same measures to sports betting and casino games, as we’ve also communicated in this news post.
However, the government seems to want to take a step back with its recent bill.
It seems that the latter is planning to redefine online gaming as a non-liberalized activity, which means that the State has a monopoly on betting, together with private companies that have signed a concession agreement with the State, can legally offer real-cash online games to the Hungarian audience.
On the other hand, the government declared that an unlimited number of operators will get this concession for a period of 5 years.
Private groups will be subject to a flat 20% tax on gross income, in addition to a monitoring fee of 2.25% of gross gaming revenue.
