Belgium attacks Betclic
Belgium legalized online gambling within its territory in September 2011.
The following year, the country developed a variety of measures, mentioned in this article, for combatting sites operating without a license.
It’s on the strength of these measures that the Gaming Commission recently attacked Betclic, carrying out a seizure of €600,000 of its funds held by Belgian financial institutions on the grounds that Betclic offered unauthorized online gambling within the country.
Already placed on the Belgian regulator’s the black list, the operator could be subject to other charges.
As a result, members of its Board of Directors may face, among other things, heavy fines.
However, the country’s strict regulations are not consistent with the European Union’s principles of free movement of commerce and services.
Consequently, Betclic is expected to point out this inconsistency in its defense against the Belgian authorities.
