Macao’s impressive profits in 2013
Today, the true world capital of gambling is no longer Las Vegas, but Macao, as we pointed out in this article.
The revenues recorded by this former Portuguese colony’s casinos have largely exceeded those of the famous city in the middle of the Nevada desert.
Although Macao’s gambling industry registered a decline in growth in 2011, as we mentioned in this article and this one, it should be noted that this relative underachievement is already a thing of the past.
Thus, last June, we were already talking about a 13.5% increase in revenues for establishments in the Chinese district.
The numbers for 2013 were recently announced, and they indicate an increase of 18.6% over the previous year in gambling industry revenues, which reach 45 billion dollars, that is, 32.8 billion euros.
The gambling industry in Macao has achieved a revenue that is 7 times more than that of Las Vegas’s casinos.
These impressive profits can be explained by improved access to the former Portuguese colony, which has led to increased attendance by the Chinese middle class, who have arrived to offset the slowing growth in VIP client attendance following a government campaign to reduce spending by high-ranking civil servants.
