Swiss casinos struggling
Land-based casinos in both Belgium and France are struggling at the moment. Swiss casinos are not in a better position – indeed, their turnover decreased by 8.2% last year.
However, in 2012 two new casinos opened, one in Neuchâtel and the other one in Zurich, meaning that there are now 21 casinos in Switzerland.
Thus, the domestic market seems completely saturated.
Moreover, no gaming establishment has managed to maintain its previous year’s turnover.
The problems faced by Swiss casinos can be partly explained by the emigration of players.
Players prefer to gamble in France, Germany or Italy, for example, where laws are less strict and there are more attractive offers.
There are also other issues that must be taken into account, including the effect of the global economic crises, the competition from online gambling sites, the strength of the Swiss Franc and the smoking ban.
