Google Glass: opportunities and concerns for casinos
There are more and more ultra-sophisticated technological gadgets that give us the impression of living in a science fiction.
Augmented eyewear represents the latest “Next Big Thing” – the most famous example is that of Google Glasses.
These glasses come with wireless Internet access and Bluetooth, a touch mini-keyboard, a microphone and a camera.
While this technology is surely an impressive step, these futuristic glasses are becoming a matter of great concern for politicians and managers in several sectors, such as cinema, theatre, as well as land-based casinos.
Gaming establishments are concerned that these discreet devices might help cheating at games like poker or blackjack.
At the same time, there are concerns relating to the private life of players, who do not necessarily want to feature in front of a slot machine or a baccarat table in a photo or a video published by a stranger on the Internet.
Thus, Las Vegas casinos and other casinos have already announced that Google Glasses and other glasses with the same characteristics will be prohibited on the their premises.
While these new devices are a cause of preoccupation for land-based casinos, they represent a very interesting development for online gambling websites, as the glasses could be used as some sort of virtual reality helmets.
Inspired by FPS games, the first-person perspective games such as the Call of Duty series, these glasses might immerse players in a real casino experience and enable them to stand alongside a croupier or other players in real time.
Of course, all this is only a guess of what might happen, but it is clear that these devices may soon revolutionise the online gaming market and make it much more real and dynamic.
